Like A Kite Without A String (a decent chunk of Kaboom's backstory, written back in 2015.)
Go Anywhere, Do Anything (companion to the above fic, but from Pat's POV.)
420's Backstory, A Confidential Talk (Kaboom shows up in both of these, but she's not the main focus of them. Figured I should probably link 'em anyway.)
I've got something special to show you
But I suppose you've seen it all before
There's something I'm trying to tell you
But then again, you've heard it all before
I survived another week, just like the one before
When everything you wanted somehow leaves you wanting more
And I looked beneath the carpet, behind each and every door
I'm trying to find you something like you've never had before
And it seems we're just beginners
No previous experience at all
Just the last original sinners
And if you need me, just be sure to call
And they tell you which way not to go and so you go that way
One child plays with one, another throws it away
Like a kite without a string, go anywhere, do anything
I'm trying to take you someplace you've never been before
I see something new in each and every move
From your old old hat to your blown-out shoes
It's tried and true and it's all I do
And I hope it's not all the same to you
The old and new, they get mistaken all the time
Is there something I've never seen before?
Or just a brand new shine
Now they're crankin' 'em out by the millions
They look and act exactly just the same
And each one's one in a million
And each has got its own elusive game
It's the same old dusty atmosphere, just like the other place
I see something familiar in each and every face
Seems to me I've seen you, been here, said this once before
I'm trying to take you someplace you've never been before
I see something new in each and every move
From your old old hat to your blown-out shoes
When I dropped it and broke it, I thought of you
And I hope it's not all the same to you
And the old and new, they get mistaken all the time
Is there something I've never seen before?
(written desc to come eventually, notes for now.)
- Kaboom's angry and antisocial, but she's also very lonely. A walking contradiction; she hates being alone, but she doesn't really get along well with other people, either. She puts up a front of being tough, 'hardcore', someone that doesn't need anyone else; in reality, she's cowardly, self-loathing, and it's not especially difficult to upset her (although she hates crying, particularly in front of others, and will try her hardest not to).
- She hates herself, particularly her appearance. She sees herself as ugly and weak, completely useless. She's convinced that people make fun of her behind her back (almost to the point of paranoia). Hates eating around other people and will avoid it if at all possible; she's afraid of being "judged".
- Completely and utterly terrified of sex, and anything relating to it. She finds it disgusting; even just thinking about it can make her feel sick.
- Doesn't like swearing, but she'll do it anyway when around others, because she thinks they'll make fun of her otherwise. (She has some oddly specific hang-ups, yeah.)
- When she was still pretty young, Kaboom's parents disappeared without warning. They were barely around to begin with, and never paid her that much attention even when they were around, so really not much changed. Kaboom always tried to cling to them when she was little; when that failed, she tried to cling to her older brother, 420, instead. He didn't even really notice this (he's pretty oblivious/scatterbrained - he honestly didn't mean to ignore her, he just had no idea how to interact with her, and didn't realize she was desperately trying to find someone that would love her, that wouldn't leave her alone), so she just gave up after that point. (Incidentally, this is partially what caused her and Giggles' rivalry thing. Giggles was old enough to notice that Kaboom wasn't following her around, but she was too little to understand what was going on; she just knew Kaboom wasn't paying her as much attention, so she thought it meant Kaboom hated her.)
- Giggles is her younger sister; they hate each other. They've argued with each other all their lives, way past the point of 'usual' sibling rivalry. They're complete opposites. Kaboom sees Giggles as an annoying ditz; too loud, too clingy, too pretty and girly. They haven't seen each other since they moved to Felicitas, and Kaboom's perfectly fine with that.
- She's never had a lot of interaction with 420. He was supposed to look after her (and Giggles) after their parents left, but he mostly just kept to himself, usually hanging out in his room doing god-knows-what. (Actually, Kaboom had a fair idea of what was going on. She's not stupid, after all. In the back of her mind, she pretty much knew he was a stoner, but she kept it to herself, never confronting him about it, or even really thinking about it.) He wasn't interested in her, so why should she be interested in him. She hasn't talked to, or seen him, in years (even before she moved out, they barely saw each other).
- Adores cats, tends to prefer them to people. She'd love to have a kitty of her own, but she can't really afford to look after one (she's barely scraping by as it is), and she knows it wouldn't be fair, since she's barely home.
- She works at a petrol station. In theory, she works part-time; in practice, she takes literally any shift they'll give her. Doesn't matter what time, if it's short notice, if she's worked for hours already; she'll do it. She's absolutely terrified of losing her job, or otherwise being unable to provide for herself; she's scared of ending up homeless, since she has nowhere else to go if she can't pay the rent. (Well, she could go back to her childhood home, but she doesn't see that as an option. Partly out of pride, partly because she just doesn't want to.)
- She's never really had any friends. She was bullied as a child; this continued (to a slightly lesser extent, cause by that point she'd gotten better at avoiding people) into high school, until she eventually found a group of people to hang out with. (need to figure out the finer details, here... not sure how they first met or anything) Kaboom was very cagey about her home life; terrified of the prospect of any authority figures finding out that her parents had abandoned their kids, in case they took her away. (Yeah, she doesn't like her siblings, but she hated the thought of the unknown even more) She never got close to any of these guys, really just hanging around them so she wasn't alone, and also so she had somewhere else to go to instead of holing up in her room all the time. (Which she would've been fine with, if it wasn't for the fact that she lived with Giggles, and the wall between their bedroom was paper-thin.)
- One of the guys she hung out with in high school is Pat. They barely knew each other, but when Pat mentioned he was moving to Felicitas City (around the time that Giggles was moving there herself) and needed a roommate, Kaboom offered to move in with him before she could even properly think about what she was saying. They lived together for a while, and it was.... a huge mess, basically. Kaboom lacked the motivation to even try to get a job, or do anything to contribute to the rent, and eventually Pat grew tired of this and told her she had a week to find somewhere else to live. She freaked out and rushed out to find a job (she basically took the first one that'd hire her - she was panicking and also she has no confidence in her skills, at all), but he still wanted her to move out. Kaboom resents Pat and hasn't seen/talked to him since she moved out; she recognizes, to some extent, that it was a huge mistake on both of their parts (again, they barely knew each other, she just really wanted to move away from Telluria), but she was still very hurt by the whole experience.
- Eventually, she wound up living with Windsor, a college kid who put a "roommate wanted" ad in the paper. Since Kaboom's always working (and when she isn't working, she's usually sleeping), she doesn't see much of Windsor, but she's fine with that. Sometimes he shows her video game mods he's working on; she really doesn't understand all of that stuff, but she tries to take an interest, if he catches her at the right time (i.e. when she's not tired/about to go to work/in a bad mood/etc).
- She's mopey, unmotivated and depressed; she doesn't have a great will to live, but she's terrified of pain (of any kind - she's a huge coward, she's the kind of person that'd freak out over a tiny scratch) and of the idea of suicide, so she continues on anyway.
- Dislikes being touched; more specifically, she hates people getting close to her (hugging her, hanging onto her, etc - anything where her body's pressed against anyone else's, she can't stand that). She'll put up with people tapping her on the shoulder, etc (she doesn't like it, but she wouldn't freak out about it, either).
- She dislikes all of Giggles' friends on principle, purely because they're Giggles' friends. She's never actually interacted with any of them for longer than a minute or two (at most). She's convinced they all got together and made fun of her behind her back. (For the record, they absolutely didn't. It would never even cross Giggles' mind to do that.)
- Her only real friend is Sanja... idk exactly how they met or anything atm (I need to figure it all out), but anyway, Kaboom has a crush on her. She's hopelessly in love with her, but she doesn't think there's any point in confessing, because why would anyone return her feelings? No one could ever love her, especially not someone like Sanja. There's no point in wrecking the only friendship she has for something that could never happen anyway (or so Kaboom thinks, anyway).

I've seen you twice, in a short time
Only a week since we started
It seems to be, for every time
I'm getting more openhearted
I was an impossible case
No one ever could reach me
But I think I can see in your face
There's a lot you can teach me
So I wanna know
What's the name of the game?
Does it mean anything to you?
What's the name of the game?
Can you feel it the way I do?
Tell me, please
Cause I have to know
I'm a bashful child
Beginning to grow
And you make me talk
And you make me feel
And you make me show
What I'm trying to conceal
If I trust in you, would you let me down?
Would you laugh at me if I said I care for you?
Could you be the same way?
Do I wanna know the name of the game?
I have no friends, no one to see
And I am never invited
Now I am here, talking to you
No wonder I get excited
Your smile and the sound of your voice
And the way you see through me
Got a feeling, you give me no choice
But it means a lot to me
So I wanna know
What's the name of the game? (Your smile and the sound of your voice)
Does it mean anything to you?
(Got a feeling, you give me no choice
But it means a lot)
What's the name of the game? (Your smile and the sound of your voice)

Beginning to grow

And you make me show
What I'm trying to conceal
If I trust in you
Will you let me down?
Would you laugh at me
If I said I care for you?
Could you be the same way?
Do I wanna know
Oh yes, I wanna know
The name of the game
(I was an impossible case)
Does it mean anything to you?
