A Confidential Talk
Giggles lay on her bed, staying idly at a school textbook, trying and failing to take any of it in. She moved back and forth, unable to get comfortable, and eventually let out a sigh. I know I promised Chuckles I'd study tonight, but I just don't understand any of it! Maybe when he gets back from his date, I could..
Just then, the phone rang, interrupting Giggles' thoughts. "I'll get it!" she yelled automatically, tossing the book aside and scrambling off her bed, rushing into the hallway and snatching up the phone before either of her older siblings could get to it. "Chuckles?!" she said excitedly, all thoughts of studying leaving her mind at the thought of her best friend.
"No, it's me, Cami," was the - somewhat tired-sounding - reply.
"Oh." Giggles paused, thrown off-guard, then realized. "Oh! Cami!" She leaned against the wall, clutching the phone excitedly. "How did the date go?! Isn't Chuckles the best?! Are you going to go out with him again? I-"
"Giggles, please.." Cami interrupted, sounding rather strained.
"Oh! Sorry, Cami. Come on, how did it go? I want to know everything~!"
"...Well... Look, Giggles, I know you meant well, but-"
Cami's next few words were drowned out by a shout from nearby. "Shut up already, damn it!"
Giggles' grip on the phone tightened somewhat in annoyance, as she turned around, to see her older sister, Kaboom, standing in her bedroom doorway, glaring at Giggles. She glared back.
"Kaboom! I'm on the phone! Just 'cause no one ever phones you-"
"They can't, because you're always on the friggin' phone!"
"No one cares, Kaboom!" Giggles said, turning her back to her sister.
"Giggles?" Cami said, somewhat concerned; she knew that her friend argued with her sister a lot, but all she could hear was shouting. "Giggles, is everything alright?"
"Yeah, it's just Kaboom again. Hang on, Cami, I've gotta go into my bedroom, away from annoying older sisters," she said, emphasizing the last part so Kaboom could hear, before walking into her bedroom, kicking the door shut behind her. "Sorry about that."
"It's okay."
"So, how did it go?" Giggles asked again, overexcited as usual, as she sat down on her bed again.
"The date?"
"Of course, what else?" she replied, giggling slightly.
"Well.. about that.." Cami sighed. "I don't mean anything against Chuckles, of course. He's very nice and I'm sure one day he'll meet a nice girl and-"
"You're not going to go out with him again?" Giggles burst out, dismayed. But I thought they'd be perfect together! They're both so nice, and they're the same age..
"I.. Giggles, I didn't know what to say to him! He didn't know what to say to me! We ended up talking about school for half an hour!"
"W-well, you like school, right?" she said quietly. Giggles didn't know what to say; she had been so convinced that the date would go perfectly.
"Not that much! Giggles, I should have told you before, I don't want a boyfriend yet. I only went on this date tonight since you said he'd already agreed, and I didn't want to be rude."
"Well.. I know you said you didn't want a boyfriend but I just.. I thought.."
"I know you meant well, Giggles," Cami repeated, "But please don't set me up on any more dates unless I ask you to. I don't want to hurt your feelings, or anyone else's, but I'm just not ready for a boyfriend right now. Graduation's coming up, I need to figure out what to do after high school. It wouldn't be fair for me to date anyone at the moment. You understand that, don't you?"
"Um, not really," Giggles admitted. "But I think I know what you mean. I'm sorry, Cami."
"It's okay, it's no one's fault! There's nothing to be sorry about."
"Well, if you say so," Giggles said, perking up again. "So, what did you and Chuckles talk about, anyway?"
Silence.
"Oh! I forgot, sorry. What was he wearing?"
"Um.. A coat? I don't really pay attention to things like that, not like you do."
"Well, did he look nice?
"I guess so.. I wasn't really looking like I said, so.."
"I'm just curious, that's all!" Giggles leaned back against the wall, idly curling a strand of hair around her finger. "I don't get to talk about things like this very much, y'know. Allie doesn't want to talk about boys 'cause she's gay, and Chuckles gets all nervous whenever I try and talk about them with him. You know what guys are like."
"Yeah, kind of. Listen, I've got to go, I really need to catch up on some homework.."
"Oh, okay!" Homework.. why does that sound famil.. Oh, right. "I just remembered, I need to do homework as well. I'll talk to you later~ Bye!"
"Bye."
Giggles got up as she heard the dialling tone, wandering out into the hallway and hanging the phone up again. "Hm.." She stared at the phone, considering. I could do my homework like I said I would.. Or I could phone Chuckles instead.
The cat girl stood there a second or two longer, playing with her hair again, before making up her mind and picking up the phone again, dialling Chuckles' number. Who cares about stupid homework, anyways?
