Day 4: Sunday 02 July 2023
New York
BTTF:TM Fourth Preview, and the Great Flyer Hunt

Today we got up and out earlier than yesterday, as we were seeing the matinee performance. We went and got some watermelon from Target on the way, then didn't really have time to do anything else before the show, so just went straight to the theatre. The queues to get in were very long, again stretching right around to the back of the theatre, but moved quickly, so we got in at around 2:40 pm. No cast board photo for today, as it was the same cast as on the first night.

Here's a photo of the super-cool sound desk. BTTF Broadway sound is powered by a Flux Capacitor ^_^

We were back in the Orchestra for today, but much closer than on Friday.
Mew: It was funny, because were sitting on the same row that we often sit in back at the Adelphi, so it felt familiar and different all at the same time. A cool thing was for act two, when George is going "Hey, you..." in the laundry scene, we were right in his line of view, so it was like he was pointing right at us ^//^.

The show was great, and very funny today in particular due to a lot of bloopers, glitches and things going wrong ^_^; After it ended, we waited outside stage door and Mew was able to meet her favourite actor, Hugh Coles (who plays George). She won't let me post the photo, which is a shame since I think it came out very nicely. She looks very happy :>

After that, we got some food. An odd thing is that it started raining really hard while we were eating, but luckily it had cleared up by the time we were ready to leave. Mew wanted to hunt for theatre flyers and look at some more shops, so off we went!

Everything in New York is so big! And Times Square is sooooo crowded, although you can't tell from this photo.
Mew: One thing we encountered a LOT over the week was that New York people just stop in the middle of the road! They also tend to cluster around crossings and just stand there (some taking photos or videos, but just as many were just standing there for no apparent reason), oblivious to the fact that they're preventing the people behind them from crossing the road. Cars also start driving before the lights have changed from red, so you're taking your life in your hands any time you try to cross the road in the city.
Someone nearly hit Mew at one point today. I don't think I can say what her reaction was...

Mew had been told that the Marriott Marquis hotel was a good place to find flyers, so we were trying to find that, but the little map thingy on her smartphone (whatever that is) wasn't being much help, except saying it was somewhere near the Disney Store, which she'd wanted to look at anyway, so we went there.
Mew: We'd actually gone into it on Thursday night too, but only briefly, to ask for directions to the theatre.

They had scaffolding up over the shop, but the shop itself was still open as usual. This big statue of Minnie Mouse dressed as the Statue of Liberty was in the front window.

We both loved this picture at the bottom of the escalator inside the shop. ^_^ The shop itself had mostly the same stock as the Disney Store in London, but they did have a nice pin of Oswald the Lucky Rabbit and Ortensia that Mew bought.

We looked around in there for a while and then went back to hunting for flyers. On the way, we passed by the Minskoff Theatre, where The Lion King is playing.

We really wanted to see this while we were there, as Mew's a huge fan of the show, but sadly it wasn't on on Tuesday, which was our only free day.

Mew: Eventually (after a LOT of searching...) we did find the hotel, but it turned out the BTTF flyers weren't out yet. (they wound up being released a few weeks later) I did get a cool TLK flyer though, so didn't come away entirely empty-handed.

It took us a while to get home that night, as we couldn't find a taxi, but it was too hot to continue walking. Eventually we found a taxi and returned to the hotel. We saw some lightning flash outside our window later in the night, but it didn't seem like there was a big storm or anything. After some channel surfing, we discovered SyFy was running a back-to-back marathon of all three Back to the Future films (we tuned in halfway through the Enchantment Under the Sea sequence), so watched that before going to bed. It was a perfect end to the day.
