The Tokyo Cast Recording did not record its own backing tracks, instead opting to use the Original London Cast Recording instrumentals, even though several songs were altered worldwide after the Original London Cast Recording was released. This means several things on the Tokyo Cast Recording do not match the show itself. Additionally, some bits differ between the London and Tokyo Cast Recordings.

This does not include (or in some cases, detail) differences that were present on the London Cast Recording too, i.e. dialogue present in the show but not on the Cast Recordings, truncated dialogue, etc - see the main page for info on that sort of thing. As I haven't seen the Tokyo production, I can't verify if the dialogue is truncated from what's said in the show, obviously. This is focusing on stuff that differs from the Original London Cast Recording, and what's known to differ from the Tokyo production specifically due to the reused backing tracks.

Overture No changes (identical to London Cast Recording).
It's Only a Matter of Time
  • "I'll be on MTV" is changed to reference the Grammy Awards instead.
  • Goldie's introductory dialogue (presumably) matches the show version, which is significantly shorter than what was present on the London Cast Recording. This means there's a noticeable pause before JP!Goldie starts talking.
Audition (The Power of Love) No changes?
Got No Future No changes?
Wherever We're Going
  • London Year 1 ending is used; the show (as far as I know) uses the Broadway/London Year 3 ending.
Hello - Is Anybody Home?
  • Dave's introductory dialogue (again, presumably) matches the show version, which is significantly shorter than what was present on the London Cast Recording. This means there's a noticeable pause before JP!Dave starts talking.
  • Linda's CD is Michael Jackson's Thriller rather than Prince's Purple Rain.
  • Linda's introductory banter with Dave, and her verse later in the song, match the original London version. The show itself uses the shortened version used in all non-West End productions.
  • Three "Hello"'s from Marty at the end; I assume the show proper only has two, like every other production from London Year 2 onwards.
It Works
  • (This is nitpicky) On the London Cast Recording, Marty speaks right away. The Tokyo Cast Recording has a slight delay before his dialogue, meaning the intro music can be heard clearly.
Don't Drive 88! No changes.
Cake
  • The title is kept (all the song titles were kept in English), although it makes no sense to do so as the Japanese lyrics do not reference cake at all (obviously, since it's an untranslatable idiom).
  • London music is used for the Cigarette Girl and Texaco Boys' introductions; I don't know if the show proper uses this or if it has the US production's "billboards" and corresponding music (I'm assuming that is the case though; I know they have the Doctor stick around for the whole song like Broadway did)
  • Dr. A. Silvestri's (who apparently has a different name in Japanese, but we don't know what it is, so...) line is added in, matching the show version. (This character didn't exist prior to the Broadway production.) As in the Broadway production, he replaces "Mr. Suit" (I'm assuming) and sticks around for the whole song.
  • Mayor Red's introductory dialogue is presumably shortened, but actually his actor managed to deliver his dialogue to match the backing track's timing, so there's no awkward pause here like there is with the other shortened-after-the-fact dialogue. Kudos!
Got No Future (Reprise 1) This wasn't on the London Cast Recording, so it's not on the Tokyo Cast Recording, either.
Gotta Start Somewhere
  • Goldie's intro dialogue is much shorter in Japanese than English, meaning more of the intro music can be heard.
  • This uses the original London ending for the song (minus the coda/encore, which was cut from the London Cast Recording), whereas (as far as I know) the show itself uses the revised/shortened ending first introduced in the Broadway show.
  • For the last "Come on, boy!" before the dance break, JP!Goldie sings his line separately to the ensemble; ENG!Goldie sings in harmony with the ensemble here, as he did with all the other "Come on boy"s.
My Myopia
  • Original London version of the song is used (no "pause" before vocals, finalized Year 1 ending). The show itself uses the Broadway version of the song (I think).
  • JP!Marty asks why George is singing before commenting on him peeping.
Pretty Baby No changes?
Future Boy
  • Uses the extended London Cast Recording version of the song.
Hill Valley High School Fight Song Song is omitted from the cast recording. For the record, the show uses the original London version (and includes the scene with Lorraine + pals at the lockers) rather than the extended version used in the US productions.
Something About That Boy
  • Biff's verse ends on his line; the goons correcting him ("Two...") and Biff's "Get 'im!" are both cut.
  • The instrumental interlude between Biff's verse and the French class verse (02:11-02:20) is included; I'm assuming the show itself cuts it, as it's been cut from all other productions from London Year 2 onwards.
21st Century
  • The ensemble's lines ("there's no more crime in the future", etc) are still sung in a stilted manner, but not as much as on the London Cast Recording.
Something About That Boy (Reprise) Song is omitted from all cast recordings.
Put Your Mind to It
  • "What Stones? And who's Dick Jagger?" is changed to something along the lines of "What's Rolling? Jaguar like the car?" (note: "Jagger" and "Jaguar" are homophones in Japanese.)
  • Like the London Cast Recording, backing vocals replace George's "well now I wanna be Dick Jagger" line.
  • Again like on the London Cast Recording, "Na-na-na-na-na..." (P-p-p-p-p-p...) is sung by backing singers. I don't know if the show itself has Marty and George sing this (as all other productions had it by this point; originally they didn't actually sing this at all in the show proper).
  • The Tokyo Cast Recording does retain the keychange at the start of the final chorus.
For the Dreamers
  • No changes?
Teach Him A Lesson
  • I think the Tokyo Cast Recording's timing of the goons' "Ika nee!" "Sou da!" ("Yes!" "No!") is actually better than it is on the London Cast Recording.
  • The goons' "Atteru?" (equivalent of "You have learned it!") line is on the Tokyo Cast Recording! The London Cast Recording cut this line.
  • I don't know if the show has the banter at the end or not, but if it does, it's not on the Cast Recording.
The Letter No changes?
Only a Matter of Time Reprise No changes?
Deep Divin'
  • Uses the extended London Cast Recording version of the song.
Pretty Baby (Reprise) Song is omitted from all cast recordings.
Earth Angel (Will You Be Mine) No changes?
Johnny B. Goode No changes?
The Clocktower No changes?
For the Dreamers Reprise No changes?
Got No Future (Reprise 2) Song is omitted from all cast recordings.
The Power of Love
  • The Tokyo Cast Recording omits the "haaaa" at the start of the song.
  • Jennifer has her "Oooh-woaaahhh" line at the end of the first chorus, then sings "That's the power of love" with Marty. (This is a difference introduced for the Broadway show and used in all subsequent productions; the West End production has never used it.)
  • As on all official recordings, the song actually ends rather than being interrupted.
Doc Returns
  • The DeLorean's "TIME CIRCUITS ACTIVATED" dialogue is included!
Curtain Call (Bows) Omitted from all cast recordings.
Back in Time No changes?
Exit Music (Back in Time) No changes (identical to London Cast Recording).
This retains its name on the Tokyo Cast Recording, although in the Tokyo production, this is not used as exit music: the audience remain seated through this music, then leave. The actual exit music for the Tokyo production is the original Huey Lewis and The News version of "Back in Time".
